CITY COUNCIL VACANCY

Vacancy on Council – Apply Now

On Monday, May 3, 2021, the West Branch City Council accepted with regret the resignation of Councilmember Tiffany Schmieder-Kups.  On behalf of the City, we thank Ms. Schmieder-Kups for her exemplary service to the community.

Following Ms. Schmieder-Kups resignation, as per City Charter section 5.2, the West Branch City Council declared Ms. Schmieder-Kups seat on the Council with a term expiring 12/31/2024, vacant.  As such, the City Council is seeking eligible candidates to fill the open seat via appointment (via a majority vote of the remaining Council members), which is scheduled to occur at a special City Council meeting scheduled for Monday, May 24, 2021 at 6:00 pm.  The meeting is to be held virtually as well as in person with facemasks and social distancing requirements in the Council Chambers of West Branch City Hall, located at 121 N. 4th St., West Branch, MI, 48661.

Interested parties must be eligible to serve on the City Council, which requires that they are “qualified electors” of the City (i.e., properly registered voters of the City of West Branch).  Interested parties must be willing and able to commit to attending Council meetings, which are typically held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m.  Council members are also generally expected to serve on various other boards and commissions, as needed.  Payment for serving as a Councilmember of the West Branch City Council is $50 per Council meeting (pay for serving on boards and commissions varies, with some board and commission meetings paying nothing).

Parties seeking to apply should be aware that they will be required to turn in to City Clerk Amanda Stang a completed application (available at City Hall or by clicking HERE) by the following deadline: 4:30 pm on Wednesday, May 19, 2021.  In addition, applicants will also be required to attend the 6:00 p.m. Council meeting scheduled for Monday, May 24, and be prepared to give an interview to the current Councilmembers and answer any questions they may have regarding their application.  A decision is anticipated to be made at that same meeting.

Additional questions regarding eligibility or service on the West Branch City Council can be directed to City Clerk Amanda Stang or City Manager John Dantzer at (989) 345-0500, or via email for Ms. Stang at clerk@westbranch.com or Mr. Dantzer at citymanager@westbranch.com.
